MOSO® Bamboo Outdoor Decking is a natural product and will perform well in virtually any climate. MOSO® Bamboo Thermo can be left to weather to a pleasant gray color, while Bamboo N-durance® will require annual maintenance to retain its warm amber color. They have similar performance properties to outdoor-rated exotic hardwoods and should be cared for similarly.
Weathering
The surface of decking will weather under the influence of wind, rain, frost, and sunshine (UV). As a result, the surface turns gray. Dirt will accumulate; splinters and small fissures may also appear. The best time for initial maintenance is a few months (3-4) after installation to allow for the grain to open up and allow a better absorption of the finish.
Care of smooth surface
Please be aware--irregularities (e.g. cracks, splinters) may be more visible on the smooth surface than on the reeded surface. With regular maintenance using Messmer’s MOSO® Bamboo Finish Oil (Outdoor Thermo) or WOCA
Exterior Wood Oil (N-durance®), this will be reduced.
Around Swimming Pools
As with any wood product used outdoors, there is always a risk of splinters arising; however, splinters from MOSO® Bamboo Decking are normally smaller than (tropical) hardwood splinters. Regular cleaning, maintenance, and application of oil (more frequently around swimming pools) is recommended to keep the surface smooth. The boards must be installed in such a way that the surface water cannot flow directly into the pool.
Snow conditions
-
Use a broom or soft bristle brush for snow. For heavier snows use a hard plastic snow shovel with rounded corners to prevent scratches to your deck. Never use a power piece of equipment to remove snow.
-
Always shovel along the length of the boards never across.
-
Rock salt is not a recommended de-icer. Use only products that are pet safe, urea free and salt free.
Cleaning - MOSO® Bamboo Thermo
-
Never use a pressure washer on MOSO® Bamboo Outdoor Thermo!
-
MOSO® Bamboo Thermo can be left to weather to a beautiful silver-gray, or oiled periodically to maintain its rich, brown color.
-
Minimum recommended maintenance is annual cleaning with Messmer’s Wood & Deck Cleaner or other oxalic acid based cleaner.
-
Sweep with a broom or blow off with a leaf blower any loose debris first.
-
Apply Messmer’s Hardwood cleaner with a pump sprayer. Mix to instructions on packaging. Spray the surface with cleaner and allow to rest on surface for 15-20 minutes.
-
Scrub with a stiff-bristle brush or silicon carbide deck brush for best results lengthwise with the grain until the surface appears clean. For larger decks you may use a floor buffer with a scrubbing head.
-
Rinse thoroughly with clean water
-
Repeat if necessary.
-
For quick spot cleaning (i.e. removal of water stains), mix 1/4 vinegar to 3/4 water in a spray bottle. spray and scrub lightly with a scrub brush. leave to air dry
-
Leave MOSO® Outdoor Thermo to dry for approx. 24 hours. The material must be completely dry before finish can be applied.
.
Application of Messmer’s finish
-
After you have purchased and installed our unfinished decking and choose to apply a finish, please let the deck boards acclimate to the environment for 6-8 weeks.
-
It is NOT advised to finish the decking immediately after installation.
-
Please clean your deck with a deck cleaner
-
(Messmer’s), allow to dry completely before application of your finish.
-
Only oil based exterior finishes are recommended. MOSO recommends: www.messmers.com/messmers-uv-plus-deck-stain
-
If Messmer’s finishes are unavailable in your area, any penetrating oil finish for exterior hardwoods is acceptable.
-
Apply in dry weather only. Avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures.
-
Follow all the manufacturer’s instructions. However, it is important to know that MOSO® Bamboo Outdoor Thermo is not porous and will not absorb finish like wood. Apply finish and wipe-off within 15 minutes to avoid over- application. This may be contrary to finish manufacturer’s instructions.
-
If you still have questions, please call the customer service number provided.
-
It is virtually impossible to permanently damage MOSO® Bamboo Outdoor Thermo when cleaning or finishing. Most finishes will not penetrate deeply into the material and can be sanded off if the result is undesired.
Cleaning - MOSO® N-durance®
-
Never use a pressure washer on MOSO® Bamboo N-durance®!
-
Mix WOCA Exterior Wood Cleaner with water in the ratio 1:2 and apply it to the surface.. If the
-
decking is extremely dirty, exterior cleaner may be used undiluted. Clean the decking with a silicon carbide broom or machine disk.
-
Scrub the soaked material lengthwise following the bamboo grain until the material appears clean. First scrub at an angle of 45 degrees before scrubbing in the lengthwise direction. When using a machine disk this is not necessary.
-
Repeat the cleaning if necessary. If some deeper stains remain after cleaning on the surface of the material, we recommend sanding (100 grit, in length grain direction).
-
If the surface has been sanded, it must first be prepared with a water-based WOCA Primer before applying the finish.
-
Clean the surface by rinsing thoroughly with clean water. To ensure that the surface is clean before oiling.
-
Leave MOSO® Bamboo N-durance® to dry for approx. 24 hours. The material must be completely dry before oil treatment can be done.
Application of WOCA oil
-
The factory applied finish is WOCA Exterior Wood Oil color: Teak. If WOCA products are not available in your area, any penetrating exterior wood oil in the color of your choice is acceptable.
-
Always make sure the decking is clean, dry, free of dust or dirt, and without any coating. Never work on a deck in direct sun.
-
Apply in dry weather only. Avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures.
-
For sanded or previously unfinished boards, to prepare the surface for oiling, apply a layer of WOCA Exterior Wood Primer. Make sure it is fully dried before applying oil in the next step.
-
Stir the oil thoroughly before use. Apply an even thin coat of oil with a brush.
-
The oil is cream-colored when it is wet.
-
After a few minutes, the material has an oily appearance as the water is evaporating.
-
Wipe off any excess oil with clean cotton cloths after no more than 5-10 minutes.
-
Take particular care to remove excess oil from joints and grooves.
-
Repeat the oiling process.
-
When the material is dry, it may be polished with a polishing pad or polishing machine to ensure an extra hard-wearing surface. It takes 24 to 48 hours for the oil to harden thoroughly, depending on weather conditions and outdoor temperature. The material should not be exposed to water during this period.
-
Pay attention to the cut ends of the boards, which tend to absorb more water, finish well to prevent water penetration.
